Word from the Chair
The PCDL Executive Board met on June 2nd and reviewed planning for the next series of PCDL monthly meetings at Onset, Lakeville, and Brockton area. The planning and assignment for the Plymouth County Democratic League follows: The Wareham DTC Summer Cookout on Sunday July 20th at the Dudley L, Brown VFW in Onset, MA. Tickets are now available. The Thanks Labor Cookout and Francis X. McKeown Award will be held at the IBEW Local #223 in Lakeville this year on Friday August 22nd so that area Legislatures are able to attend. On Friday September 12th we will hold a Candidates Night for all Democratic Candidates to offer their encouraging words to win your support prior to the September 16th State Primary. And on Sunday October 19th we will hold our Unity Breakfast at the Monponsett Inn on Route #58 in Halifax so that we can be unified for the November 4th Elections. You might think this is a lot of scheduling but with the next edition of the Newsletter being issued in September it is necessary to do the planning.
Candidate for the 4th Plymouth District State Representative, Jim Cantwell, reviewed his campaign efforts and spoke on the hard work that all Candidates for this Office were making to get out their message. Jim also encouraged attendance at the June 19th PCDL Monthly meeting to be held at PJ’s Country House cosponsored by the Marshfield and Scituate DTC and honoring Retiring Representative Frank Hynes and the Memory of Frank Powers.
The Halifax DTC Breakfast at the Monponsett Inn on June 1st was very well attended and once again a great meal. Dot Landry and the Halifax Committee were very gracious and welcomed one and all. Dot presented a Halifax Town Report to Candidate for the 2nd Plymouth & Bristol State Senate, Tom Kennedy, who was amazed that the detail in the report included salaries of all the town employees. The Guest Speaker was Representative Tom Calter who spoke on his efforts of his first term. Others who spoke briefly were: Register of Deeds, John R. Buckley, Jr., Register of Probate Bob McCarthy, Middleboro DTC Chair Tom McGuire Candidate for Plymouth County Commissioner, Laurie Maker, and Halifax Selectman, Troy Garron. Also Present with campaign Literature was Dennis Gallagher for Candidate, Plymouth County Treasurer, Tom O’Brien. Candidates for: Plymouth County Commissioner's John Riordan, Richard Zaccaro, and Mark Linde for Southeastern Regional School Committee. (continued on page 2)
The PCDL Monthly meeting cosponsored by the Marshfield and Scituate DTC’s was held at PJ’s County House in Scituate on June 19th with many in attendance. State Representative Frank Hynes was the Honored Guest and was presented with an “Appreciation Plaque” from the Chair of the PCDL and several follow-on speakers; Mike Maresco read a proclamation from Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin and Mike’s own write up on how 26 years evolved detailing travel time, constituent services etc., Jim Cantwell expounded on the extra efforts Frank provided to Marshfield and Scituate citizens and Norma Fenochietti read a letter from Phil Johnston calling attention to a special Public Official who was always willing to stand up for what is right and was a true reformer and a person of total integrity. Jean Christensen Marshfield DTC Chair also thanked Frank for his able staff and his always helpful services.
Representative Hynes thanked all for the kindness shown and covered topics over the 26years of service and his plans for his next endeavors which don’t start until his term officially ends.
Claire Powers was presented a PCDL “In Memoriam Plaque” in Honor of her husband Francis Powers, Clerk of Plymouth County Courts. Claire and Edmund Purcell graciously thanked the PCDL for remembering Frank Powers and spoke on the wonderful person he was.
